How business electricity pricing works

Your bill is made up of two main parts: a unit rate for each kilowatt hour (kWh) you use, and a standing charge paid daily regardless of use. On top of these sit network costs for moving electricity across the grid, government and environmental levies, Climate Change Levy where it applies, and VAT.

Not every quote shows these the same way, so we compare on total expected annual cost for your usage, not just the headline unit rate. A low unit rate with a high standing charge can cost a low-usage business more over a year.

Meter types and why they matter

  • Standard (single-rate) meters — One unit rate at all times.
  • Multi-rate / Economy 7 — Cheaper night rates. Useful if you run equipment overnight.
  • Smart meters — Send readings automatically, which means accurate bills and no estimated readings.
  • Half-hourly (HH) meters — Record usage every 30 minutes. Required for larger supplies and priced using your actual demand profile.

Finding your MPAN

Your Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN) identifies your electricity supply. It's printed on your bill, usually in a box starting with an "S". The bottom row of 13 digits is the core number suppliers use to quote. Add it in the optional section of our form and we can price more accurately.

Ways to keep electricity costs under control

  • Renew early instead of rolling onto out-of-contract rates.
  • Check your bills are based on actual readings, not estimates.
  • Review your standing charge as well as your unit rate.
  • Match your contract to how you use energy: night-time users may benefit from multi-rate tariffs.
  • For multi-site businesses, align contract end dates so you can review the whole portfolio at once.
